What Are Our Goals?
• We want to build a name for ourselves on campus as a moderate voice calling for reasoned, dispassionate discourse when it comes to the Middle East.
• We want to educate students on our campus about our specific approach to change - how it differs from other approaches and how we can be most effective in our advocacy work on this issue.
• We want to build on our efforts by promoting future events (Info Meeting, Party for Peace, Speakers, Discussions, Films, Etc.)
Who Constitutes Our Target Audience?
• People who support a two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a comprehensive resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict
• People who are open to learning more about what is happening in the region from a balanced and credible perspective
What Do You Want To Accomplish With This Audience?
• Educate about our methods for change - how it differs from other approaches and how we can be most effective in our advocacy work on this issue.
• Get people talking and sharing their opinions in a constructive manner where all ideas and opinions are welcome in a respected environment
• Outreach for upcoming events on campus (Info Meeting, Party for Peace, Speakers, Discussions, Films, Etc.)
• Outreach for West Bank tours this summer so students traveling to Israel can see the situation with their own eyes
• Outreach for October 2009 J Street Conference where we hope to bring 250 students to represent the student voice of the movement
• Sign up on your contact list so we can continue to build on a local, regional and national level
Where’s A Good Place For Our Action?
• The most central student center which sees high numbers of student traffic during the planned time of the action
• Outside spaces on campus which also see high numbers of student traffic during the planned time of the action
When’s A Good Time For Our Action?
• Before Info Meeting with J Street Executive Director Jeremy Ben-Ami
• Before the Party for Peace where you can raise money for students interested in the J Street conference
• Before the “Are You Going to Israel? Fair” where you can reach out to students interested in free educational tours of the West Bank
• Afternoons or evenings when there are high numbers of student traffic
What Are Some Recommended Actions?
Rock Project
Sit out somewhere in the middle of campus with rocks big enough for people to write on and sharpies for them to write with. It’s helpful to explain that rocks are symbolic to both people in the region. To Jews, they represent mourning, to Palestinians resistance. Ask people as they stop by to write their thoughts about the Middle East on a rock. It will catch people’s attention and make them think. Then take the opportunity to tell them about everything else you are doing on and off campus!
Picture Project
Have pictures of destruction from both Gaza and Israel. You don’t have to say which pictures are from where. On top ask the question “Tired of Seeing This?” Next to this display have an arrow pointing to a sign that says something like “Make Change with Us” or pictures of positive, uplifting change (positive things from the region, uplifting Obama style, peace groups, images of coming to Washington). Make a drawing with the J Street logo.
What Are Some Recommended Advertising Methods?
• Use photos from the Picture Project display around campus as you flier for event – Don’t forget date/time and location!
• Use the “We Can’t Wait” images in your fliers, actions in order to use the same “visual voice” from the “We Can’t Wait” campaign from last semester
